Aero socks, aero shirts and aero bikes. These days, everything in cycling seems to focus on aerodynamics. But what exactly does the term aero mean and what advantages can you gain from it? We would like to tell you more about the aerodynamics of cycling clothing.

The main reason a cyclist brakes comes from air resistance. Aerodynamics is literally the science of how air visibly moves along an object and thus closely related to air resistance. This is why the word appears so much in cycling.

Cycling pros do everything they can to be as aerodynamic as possible on the bike. A special bike, closed helmets, shaved legs and so on. For a pro, the gain from this makes a big difference. However, for an amateur, the gain from a new aero bike is nil.

What can help, however, is adjusting your posture by lowering your handlebars, for example. When doing this, make sure your arms can always find comfortable support on the handlebars to take the pressure off your lower back. You will find that your body has to get used to a deeper posture at first but this in itself can't hurt. If after a few rides it still isn't comfortable you might reconsider raising the handlebars again.

What also helps, and costs less money than a new bike, is customising your outfit. You may not need to buy a special time trial helmet but consider one with fewer holes. Good goggles, a tight shirt and, of course, aero socks also help. Realise that every little bit adds up and together does make a reasonable difference.
