This time it became Flanders: a pretty much sacred environment for cycling enthusiasts, and so that included appropriate preparation. There was a <i>Roundbook</i> of 25 pages, complete with routes for each category of cyclist and a veritable star rating in which all 17 participants were dissected on their strengths and weaknesses.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-4"><p>These included top favourites Garikai and Wout (both five stars and true Cannons), Huib (“<i>luxury servant</i>”) there were three and had to <i>Hamburger</i> Sander (“<i>Huh, did someone say training?</i>”) make do with just one star. The course builder - Huib, also the author of the Rondeboek and the man of the stars - had also done his best to include as many unpleasant cobbled climbs and stretches as possible in the routes. On the Haaghoek - a nasty downhill road with poorly laid stones - he was still willing to take a vote. “2 in favour and 14 against? Totally fine guys, let's skip that one.”</p>
<p>The next day, to everyone's surprise, the same Haaghoek was ‘just’ still included in the route.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-5"><p><b>Like Museeuw in his best days</b></p>
<p>Why not: cycling in Flanders is an ordeal for the average cyclist anyway. It is a succession of short but mostly steep climbs. Well-known climbs like the Koppenberg, the Paterberg and the Bosberg are obstacles where the legs can give out just like that. That happened to Chiel, for example; three stars and compared in the Rondeboek to Johan Museeuw in his best days, but still felled by severe cramp in the last thirty kilometres.</p>
<p>Even so, cycling in Flanders was a joy. Four days of brilliant weather certainly helped, also because riding over wet cobblestones is almost impossible. Which cycling fan does not remember the images of the spekglad Koppenberg in 2024? Van der Poel got to the top by bike, as did Jorgenson and Pedersen. The rest of the pros: with bike in hand, stumbling towards the top.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-6"><p><b>Roubaix showers</b></p>
<p>As a bonus, we paid a visit to the nearby - and at least as legendary - Roubaix Vélodrome. The gates were open, so cycling onto the cycling track was no problem at all. And we were also able to take a look at the showers. Is it okay to take one of those typical ‘look at me having given up on all those nasty Paris-Roubaix cobbled sections’ photos? At least Garikai thought so.</p>

As lovers of beautiful (touring) tours, we have completed a lot of them, with some requiring a bit more training than others, of course. A very nice one that was still missing is the <i>Maratona dles Dolomites</i>, the Dolomites Marathon.</b></p>
<p><b style="letter-spacing: 0.24px; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);">Until this summer then, as Pedaleur Jelger headed to northern Italy to cycle this legendary ride. You can read what he thought of it here!</b></p>
<p>With a group of friends, we try to schedule a nice cycling trip every year. One time it might be a long weekend, and (if all the busy family lives permit) the following year another week.</p>
<p>As lovers of epic bike rides, the Dolomites Marathon was still high on our wish list. So we booked a cottage, piled up the cars full of bikes and set off. With a bit of a setback, it takes 18 hours on the road from North Holland, but hey, you have to give something for a beautiful cycling environment.</p>
<h2>Loners</h2>
<p>At just under 140 kilometres, the Marathon is probably one of the shortest of all those monster rides. The Marmotte was almost 200 kilometres (counting the descent of Alpe d'Huez), after the Trois Ballons the counter even read 230 kilometres. The number of altimeters - 4,200 - is not bad.</p>
<p>As it can rain heavily in the mountains, we chose the driest day to do the trek. With the expectation beforehand that it would be a bit ‘every man for himself’ anyway. In any case, our group of friends consists of loners with their own preferences (“I want to have an extensive lunch!”, “No, we'll get something at a bakery and ride straight on!”) and the course also makes it difficult to ride together for a long time. Whereas the Marmotte still has dozens of kilometres of reasonably flat valley, the Marathon is up-down-up-up-down. So tricky with different climbing and descending speeds. <p>What makes the Marathon (even) spicy(er) is precisely that constant ascending and descending. The climbs are not super long, at most an hour for a reasonable cyclist, but immediately after an intense (because crowded and twisty) descent, the next mountain looms. And sometimes there is an extra spicy short section in it. Like the <i>Mur DL Giat</i>, the Cat's Wall, at up to 19 per cent a slightly shorter version of the Keutenberg.</p>
<p>The scenery is beautiful, especially on a bright day like ours. Nature is very rugged and you are constantly cycling between steep rock faces. In terms of traffic and roads, it could be better: during the descent of Passo Valparola, for example, we had to get off our bikes as many as five times for traffic lights or road breaks.</p>
<p>(A few days earlier, we were confronted with an extreme example of this, but these photos are an aside).</p>

<h2>Passo Giau</h2>
<p>With that, the cons were actually mentioned. The ride was a fantastic experience and fortunately there were plenty of moments along the way when we could still meet for a coffee break or a quick lunch.</p>
<p>At the end, it was a bit of a struggle. We had the tough Passo Giau as our last climb, as we did not start the tour at the official start. A 10-kilometre climb that rarely gets below 9 per cent, that's a tough finish when you already have 3,300 altimeters on it.</p>
<p>But afterwards, we could look back on a wonderful day with pleasure. And perhaps already thinking about the next destination.</p>

We did it - two years ago now - with great pleasure and are happy to take you on this adventure. We covered part of The Congo Nile Trail; a challenging bike ride along truly breathtaking landscapes. The entire trail is 260 kilometres, which is often completed over about five days. Since we did not have the time for that, we did the first two stages. These took us from Gisenyi to Kibuye.
</p>
<h3>Day 1: a dip into local communities</h3>
<p>As mentioned, the trip began in Gisenyi, with an experienced guide from Rwandan Adventures accompanying us. This city borders Congolese Goma, which is currently very unsettled. So read up well in advance, whether this area is safe enough to travel to. In any case, we did not notice anything.</p>
<p>The first day led us through several small villages, where curious children eagerly chased us. On the way, we stopped for lunch and ate some kind of fried fish, which we later saw drying on the ground. Perhaps a little dubious, but it tasted good and it was a nice introduction to local cuisine!</p>
<p>’In the evening, we spent the night at a coffee farm, where we not only slept but also got a guided tour. We learned all about the production process of the - according to them - perfect coffee. And admittedly; the coffee tasted great. We were also chartered to be part of their latest marketing campaign.</p>
<h3>Day 2: back to Gisenyi via Lake Kivu</h3>
<p>On the second day, we continued our journey. After a few hours of cycling, we returned by boat from Kibuy to Gisenyi. This trip (across Lake Kivu) offered stunning views of the immense lake and was a welcome change after the intensive cycling. Snoozing for a while.</p>
<p>In total, we cycled 40 kilometres on the first day and 25 kilometres on day two. These do not seem like huge distances. However, the trek was challenging, with rough paths and steep climbs. There were even times when we had to walk with the bike on our necks because of the heavy rain, which had completely washed away some of the trails. In total, our Wahoo indicated some 1,500 altimeters in just 65 kilometres of cycling. So there was hardly a metre of flatness.</p>
<h3>The Congo Nile Trail: unforgettable</h3>
<p>Despite the challenges, the Congo Nile Trail was an unforgettable experience. The scenery was breathtaking, and the locals were exceptionally friendly and enthusiastic. Everywhere we went, happy children ran with us. That made the trip even more special.</p>
<p>The Congo Nile Trail thus offers not only a sporting challenge, but also a deep immersion in the local culture and nature. For adventurers looking for a unique experience in Rwanda, this cycle route is definitely recommended!</p>

<p>To be honest, I had never heard of such a thing as a ‘Dragon Ride’. But this comment from a British colleague quickly piqued my interest. Some detective work taught me that the event was the Welsh version of what the Tour of Flanders tour is to the Flemish and the Amstel Gold Race to the Dutch. Beautiful scenery, quite a few hills. I was convinced. So, I signed up for the 150 kilometres last September, and so did my colleague.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-14"><h2>Gliding in winter</h2>
<p>Now I always get through the winter in terms of cycle training (cycling a bit through the dunes, a lot of Zwiften), but it's nice to have a concrete goal. In any case, I was ready for it. The few times I polled my colleague, he also seemed confident. His exercise bike had broken down, it was just raining outside and he was busy. But as soon as the weather turned nice, it would all be fine. Well, at least that's what he said.</p>
<p>Until I got a chat from him a week or so before the start, not long after I jokingly pointed him to the website <a href="https://www.indekken.nl">www.indekken.nl,</a> For all your cycling woes. It wasn't going to be him anyway. Busy at work, busy with kids, in short: hopelessly out of shape.<br />
And so, on 23 June, the day of the march, I found myself at the start line alone after all.</p>
<p>That is, with the 4,498 others who had not come up with a subterfuge.</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-15"><h2>Brecon Beacons Nature Park</h2>
<p>The<em> Medio Fondo</em> (you could choose distances of up to 300 kilometres, but I was fine with well over half of that) started at the coast and headed into the Brecon Beacons Nature Park. Or, as they call it in Wales itself, Bannau Brycheiniog.</p>
<p>After a not yet spectacular start along some busy roads and industry, the ride quickly became more beautiful. During the ride, you have to overcome just over 2,000 altimeters, spread over a few nice gradual climbs of up to 5 kilometres. Especially the last few are in stunning scenery.<br />
My condition was fine, but as a mechanic it will probably never work out for me. Due to two punctures, I spent so much time messing around on the side of the road that I felt I had seen three quarters of the other competitors drive by. They all nicely asked ‘<em>Are you okay, mate?</em>‘</p>
</div><div class="fusion-text fusion-text-16"><h2>Cycling in Wales</h2>
<p>That setback aside, I can definitely recommend the Dragon Ride. The scenery is beautiful, the event very well organised and the atmosphere is top notch. Does cycling in Wales have my preference say, the Vosges or the Eifel? Maybe not directly. England and Wales are a bit less geared to cyclists and it is a bit more time-consuming to get here.</p>
<p>But if you do happen to be in the UK, and are invited by a colleague to do the Dragon Ride; don't miss the opportunity!</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<h2>Cycling the Elfstedentocht</h2>
<p>“How long do we have to go against this pockmarked wind?”<br />
“Kilometre or 70.”<br />
“Head over heels then?”<br />
“Seems sensible.”</p>
<p>Nobody had said it would be easy when we decided to cycle the Elfstedentocht. We also looked forward to it a bit: <a href="https://pedaleurdecharme.com/en/product/wielersokken-polderkoning/">endless pastures</a> and, because we did it in March and not during the official tour, still little sociability in the cities. But my business partner - and brother - Garikai and I felt we should have this ‘sacred’ cycling goal on our CV.</p>
<p>Because in the Netherlands, first you have the Ronde van Noord-Holland (okay, that's local chauvinism), then nothing for a long time and then tours like the Amstel Gold Race and the Elfstedentocht. Ice skating will probably never be it, so I'll just have to cycle.</p>
<h2><strong>The Frisian Eleven Cities<br />
</strong></h2>
<p>OK, so the goal was to complete the route along the legendary eleven Frisian towns: just under 220 kilometres of cycling. Booked a hotel in Harlingen and set off early (never our strong point anyway). Garikai had a stroke of genius to shorten the trip by a few kilometres: the week before, the Elfsteden race took place, and those riders had a very efficient route along all the towns. Winner Elmar Reinders' .gpx file would be our guide.<br />
In the beginning of the trip - despite the puckish wind from Stavoren - it went quite nicely. We could quickly tick off Bolsward and Workum. And at Hindeloopen we have been wondering since the 1997 Tour: has it got a stamp or not?</p>

<p>We were on the road so early that the catering outlets were not yet open when we had covered the first 100 kilometres. Fortunately, Bakery Bart had plenty of delicious sandwiches ready.</p>

<p>When the route took a kink to the north, cycling suddenly became a lot easier too. The Frisian landscape consists almost entirely of meadows, so we were able to develop a nice pace as far as Sneek and Leeuwarden. There followed a setback: the route discovery turned out to be less ingenious than expected.</p>
<h2><strong>Too late in Dokkum<br />
</strong></h2>
<p>For the Elfsteden race, of course, all roads were blocked off, including the 80-kilometre-per-hour provincial roads. Here the big puzzling began, which didn't stop until Dokkum. This town seemed to be accessible exclusively by the main road and we tried as many as four or five different ways before we finally found a cycle path. For a while we feared that our trip would be stranded in Dokkum like Rudy Langen's from Assen.</p>
<p>When we finally reached Dokkum, the reward followed: lunch at the local petrol station. Yes, the Elfsteden race did not go through the historic city centre. Oh well, the pastries provided enough energy to complete the remaining 50 kilometres.</p>
<p>With the wind again pretty much against us, the countdown was blown.</p>

Another 30 kilometres...<br />
Ten more... five more...</p>
<p>Two more ki... LEK!</p>
<p>For Garikai's morale, this was pretty much the decisive blow. “You go get the car, I don't feel like doing this anymore,” he said.”</p>

<h2>Heroic</h2>
<p>We agreed that throwing in the towel two kilometres before the finish was not so heroic after all. The tyre was changed and on a moderately inflated spare we reached our hotel.</p>
<p>Mission completed. Would we recommend the ride? Yes, we would. As a cycling enthusiast, you should have cycled the Eleven Cities Tour at least once, even if it is not as prestigious as the Tour of North Holland.</p>
<p>Then perhaps do it in summer, when the Frisian pavement cafés are pleasantly crowded. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We would like to take you through our adventure on the “Strade Bianche”, the white roads, where my girlfriend and I cycled part of this iconic route. It was a mix of challenging climbs, unexpected gravel conditions and a well-earned beer in Siena. What an absolute recommendation this is; go cycle the Strade Bianche yourself!</p>
<h2>Meeting the challenge together</h2>
<p>During our - my friend Irene and myself - holiday in Tuscany, we also visited Siena. Of course, as a big cycling fan, that's when the itch soon sets in. After all, from here you can conquer the iconic white roads of the Strade Bianche. We quickly went in search of handsome gravel bikes to hit the road. While the top riders just do it on their narrow tyres, for the lesser gods like us it is really nice to have a bit more grip. We ended up at <a href="https://www.bike-tour-tuscany.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bike Tour Tuscany</a>; recommended! In fact, this guy rented out Bianchi gravel bikes. The Bianche on a Bianchi, which does make the experience perfect! The route offered not only challenging climbs, but also a picturesque landscape that we could explore together. Of course, to do this with your girlfriend does add an extra dimension.</p>

<h2>The Strade Bianche route</h2>
<p><strong> </strong>Since it was bloody hot and Irene was not yet incredibly experienced with gravel climbs of 20%, we went for a slightly modified route. We picked the route from one Mathieu's Strava profile and shortened it slightly. You can skip a loop in the beginning of the route fairly easily, leaving you with a route of around 85 kilometres, while still including the most beautiful stretches from the race. And those strips are really beautiful! Rolling terrain, mountain ridges, cypresses and wonderfully quiet.</p>

<h2>Steep climbs and real gravel experience</h2>
<p>Strade Bianche's reputation is shaped by its steep climbs, and we certainly felt them. During the ride, we noticed that the condition of the gravel was a bit rougher than the perfect images on TV. Here and there the gravel is looser than you would suspect, and at times it felt like tractor tracks were running across the trails. At least it gave us an honest look at the challenges of this famous route. Even more respect for the top riders!</p>

<h2>Pause for relaxation</h2>
<p>Halfway through, we decided to deviate from the route for a few kilometres and relax on a charming terrace. A delicious panini and a refreshing coke were the perfect fuel for the rest of our journey. A short break to catch our breath and enjoy the moment. Anyway, in the heat, it is wise to increase fluid levels wherever you can. Once on the white roads, you may just run out of water.</p>

<h2>Enjoying a beer in Siena</h2>
<p>On arrival in Siena, we rewarded ourselves with a well-earned beer on a local terrace. It was a relaxing end to a day of physical and mental exertion. The sound of clinking glasses and tasting cold lager were the icing on the cake of our Strade Bianche experience.</p>
<h2>Go cycle the Strade Bianche yourself!</h2>
