]]> It is five o'clock and I am sitting at my laptop. I'm getting ready for a 60-kilometre run through the polder. Just to clear my head. A bar goes into my shirt, I fill my water bottles and pull my bike out of the shed. Into the polder.

We go on the road

After 15 kilometres or so, I spot a fellow rider in the distance, racing by himself. Great, I have a target point. The wind is against me and at 36 in the hour I ride towards it. Getting closer, I see a sturdy man, about fifty I guess, but with the shaved calves of someone who has been cycling all his life. I push on to outpace him, and succeed. I immediately leave him behind in the empty polder. Small victory; nice.

Unfortunately, I have to brake for a traffic light. Too bad, because I was just getting into it nicely. Neatly I squeeze the brakes, while the man I had just overtaken pops full through a red light. Not quite decent, but then again, I have a new target. When I overshoot him for the second time, he does get on my wheel. This time he was better prepared than the first time.

The wheelsucker

Just testing how tough the best man is. 36 becomes 37, 37 becomes 38. His calves had already somewhat betrayed his toughness and he remains stoically in my wheel, without even giving an impetus to take over once. Clearly; I am dealing with a wheel sucker. Also known as a wheel-sucker. Partly because I am starting to feel my own legs, I decide to leave it at that and accept that Peter - that is what I have since come to call him - will continue to shadow me for the next few kilometres. Neatly I signal the loose manhole covers, the people we overtake and the speed bumps.

After about 15 kilometres there is another red traffic light and because of the crowds, Peter is also forced to squeeze the brakes. He comes up next to me on the left and I look at him, waiting for him to thank me for all the work I have done in the lead. He doesn't give me a glance. Prick. While the light is still red, he finds a quieter moment and pulls himself back on track. In the distance, he turns off. I race on by myself again.

Yet there are also moments when we take ourselves more seriously as cyclists. That we are proud to have completed a polder lap with a 35 average, or to have set a good time on the virtual Alpe du Zwift (which we are forced to cycle on more often than the real one). That happened last summer, during a tour with Andrea Tafi and Johan Museeuw, two great cycling heroes of ‘days gone by’.

First a word on how we got to that tour: a few months earlier, Garikai was on holiday in Tuscany and stayed in the Bed & Breakfast From Tafi. For those who do not know Andrea Tafi: jovial Italian, winner of both the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. During a ride through the beautiful Tuscan countryside, Tafi invited Garikai to come to the Belgian Ardennes in August. There, he organised the ‘Andrea Tafi Mapei Cycling Tour’, in which Johan Museeuw would also take part. For those who do not know Johan Museeuw: Belgian folk hero, former world champion, multiple winner of both Roubaix and De Ronde and known among cycling followers as ‘The Lion of Flanders’.

We decided not to turn down this invitation and enthusiastically reported to a village near Liège on a sunny Saturday morning. With the two cycling legends and about 100 other enthusiasts, we set off on a ride of about 120 kilometres through the Walloon hills. The first part, we understood, would be a ‘gentle pace’. Then, after the dressing station, it would be at a tighter pace towards the beer at the finish. Well, that leisurely pace was already pretty tough for us; thirty average, with constant short and longer climbs. Not something we do every day. It seemed easy for the ‘veterans’, both Tafi and Museeuw were well into their fifties. Not surprising in the case of the well-trained Italian, but ‘The Lion of Flanders’ was a little less tight than during his pro career.

In any case: when it was every man for himself after the break, we did not see both gentlemen again. At a - for us - nice pace, we boomed towards the finish, where the former pros had already been drinking beer for a while. About half an hour, we calculated when we compared some Strava results afterwards. Our self-confidence, carefully built up in the previous period, had thus been wiped out in one fell swoop. And since our sock company didn't exist back then, we didn't look good either. How could we still put a positive spin on this? Fortunately, that turned out to be easier than thought. Sitting at a table, we heard Museeuw grumble a bit about the fast pace: “At the end, it did go a bit too fast for me.”

Well, we could do with that. “How was your bike ride?” “Went really well. We cycled the Lion of Flanders in a heap.”

Moet ik lage of hoge fietssokken kiezen?

Wat ons betreft moet je hoge cycling socks kiezen! Dat ziet er een stuk beter uit en het heeft een compressie-effect. Compressie zorgt ervoor dat de doorbloeding van het onderbeen beter verloopt. Ofwel; je kunt door het geluid fietsen zonder te verzuren. Ok, dat is onzin. Maar dat het er beter uitziet is wel waar. Kijk nou zelf.

Welke lengte moet een fietssok hebben?

Fietssokken moeten – wat ons betreft – tot de onderkant van de kuit komen. En wat betreft de wetten van de UCI is dit ook het geval. De UCI bepaalde dat de sokken niet te hoog mogen zijn. Sokken tot net onder de knie zijn dus uit den boze.

Iedereen weet nog wel het moment dat Remco Evenepoel z’n sokken na de start van z’n tijdrit op het WK in Yorkshire weer omhoog trok, om zo een groter aerodynamisch voordeel te hebben. Het is inderdaad waar dat aerosocks vaak wat hoger zijn en van “snel” materiaal gemaakt zijn, om zo kostbare watts te besparen. Op het hoogste niveau zit ’t ‘m in de marginal gains. Op ons niveau zit ’t ‘m vooral in de esthetiek; hoger is mooier. Maar te hoog is lelijk. Het zijn geen voetbalkousen. Houd de onderkant van de kuit dus maar aan als stelregel.

We at Pedaleur de Charme are fond of cycling terms. And Chasse Patate is perhaps one of the most beautiful cycling terms there is. But what does it mean?

Runaround

When you're racing and you've missed the break, you have two options: you can mope about and hang back in the bunch, or you can try to bridge across to the leading group. We, of course, encourage the latter! Racing with grit! However, it's highly likely that you'll end up chasing alone and won't manage to reach the leading group. Then you're faced with a choice again: either you let yourself be caught, or you embark on a hopeless mission to swim solo for kilometres between the groups. If you choose the latter, you find yourself in the "Chasse Patate". You're a lone warrior, undertaking a completely useless ordeal, but you refuse to give up. Tear-jerkingly beautiful!

Where does Chasse Patate come from?

The term originates from the six-day racing circuit. The "Chasse Patate" was a race held to fill the gaps in the official programme. It was intended to fill the afternoons, before the more highly regarded evening and night sessions. Spectators were often schoolchildren and the racing was primarily for entertainment. The top riders in the standings could rest their legs, while the less fancied riders could gain a lap or two back, bringing the field closer together and making the six-day race appear more exciting.

The term “patattenjacht” officially comes from the Six Days of Paris. Before the race, the cyclists would eat potatoes. Because they all went onto the track with full stomachs, the subsequent points race wasn't of the highest standard. The riders took it relatively easy, to give their digestion more time. The points were shared back and forth, but little effort was made to actually gain laps. Thus, the Chasse Patate became a race for padding, much like that lone breakaway rider swimming by themselves between the groups. Padding. But beautiful padding.

Het ligt er volledig aan wat je zelf prettig vindt en wat je wilt bereiken, maar Pedaleur de Charme helpt je graag op weg. Zodat jij er goed uit ziet op de fiets!

1. Aerosokken

Wil je kostbare watts sparen, racen op de weg of tijdrijden? Dan raden we aerosocks aan. De aerosokken zijn wat hoger en bevatten spandex, hierdoor zijn deze sokken aerodynamischer. Aan de binnenzijde van de sok zitten twee siliconenstrips, zodat de sok goed hoog blijft zitten. Buiten dat de aerodynamica enkele watts scheelt, zien ze er ook gewoon heel goed uit!

2. “Gewone” wielersokken

Wil je een rustig koffierondje doen en ben je er niet op uit om KOM’etjes te rapen, kies dan lekker comfortabele cycling socks. De aerosokken hebben dan iets minder zin, omdat je geen kostbare watts hoeft besparen. De “gewone wielersok” is ook wat goedkoper, dus het geld dat je hiermee bespaart kun je uitgeven aan een kop koffie, een appelpunt en/of een goed speciaalbiertje.

3. Hoge of lage wielersokken?

We raden een wat hogere sok aan. Die zien er natuurlijk echt geweldig uit, maar ze geven ook het compressie-effect. Wanneer sokken een compressiewerking hebben, stimuleren ze de doorbloeding, waardoor je minder snel verzuurt. Ofwel; met hoge wielersokken rijd je iedereen uit het wiel. Ok, onzin natuurlijk… maar je ziet er wel goed uit!

1. Polish your machine

Your machine should be impeccably clean. It is best to give your bike a quick clean immediately after a ride. Run a brush over the sprockets and chain and wipe away all the mud with a cloth while it is still easy to remove. When everything is caked on, you will find it much harder to get your machine clean.

2. Buy cycling clothes that fit

There is nothing as ugly as cycling clothes that do not fit at all. Of course, oversized jerseys that flub around your body look like crap. And beyond that, you save a lot of precious watts if you have well-fitting clothes.

3. Colours should match

If you wear purple trousers with a bright green shirt and red socks, you should be taken off the road immediately. Make sure the colours you wear don't clash.

4. Handsome cycling glasses

You can't get on a bike with casual sunglasses. Make sure you have handsome - preferably slightly large - cycling glasses. And wear the legs of your glasses over the straps of your helmet.

5. Socks!

Make sure you have good - preferably high - socks wears. That fit nicely. Of course, we like our socks pearly white, so if yours are no longer clean, just buy a new pair. They don't cost that much with us. And, of course, white socks go well with any outfit. See all our socks here.

What are aerosocks?

Aerosocks are – you guessed it – aerodynamic socks. Due to the fabric, the length of the sock, and the very tight fit, these socks have lower air resistance than “ordinary” socks. So it saves a few watts for the same effort. While for pros, where every watt counts – marginal gains – that naturally doesn't matter so much for the cycling tourist like you and me. But we just think it looks cool. And if it looks cool and also works in your favour, then of course there's absolutely no reason not to ride with it.
