Aero socks, aero shirts and aero bikes. These days, everything in cycling seems to focus on aerodynamics. But what exactly does the term aero mean and what advantages can you gain from it? We would like to tell you more about the aerodynamics of cycling clothing.

In an already existing blog we explain the benefits of aerosocks are, in this new blog we take a closer look at the aerodynamic properties of cycling clothing. And we explain how you can benefit from this. To tell you all about aerodynamic cycling clothing, we let Hugo Lindenbergh, co-founder of Acelera Cycling Couture. A cycling apparel brand that specialises in aerodynamics, among other things.

The main reason a cyclist brakes comes from air resistance. Aerodynamics is literally the science of how air visibly moves along an object and thus closely related to air resistance. This is why the word appears so much in cycling.

Cycling pros do everything they can to be as aerodynamic as possible on the bike. A special bike, closed helmets, shaved legs and so on. For a pro, the gain from this makes a big difference. However, for an amateur, the gain from a new aero bike is nil.

What can help, however, is adjusting your posture by lowering your handlebars, for example. When doing this, make sure your arms can always find comfortable support on the handlebars to take the pressure off your lower back. You will find that your body has to get used to a deeper posture at first but this in itself can't hurt. If after a few rides it still isn't comfortable you might reconsider raising the handlebars again.

What also helps, and costs less money than a new bike, is customising your outfit. You may not need to buy a special time trial helmet but consider one with fewer holes. Good goggles, a tight shirt and, of course, aero socks also help. Realise that every little bit adds up and together does make a reasonable difference. There are all sorts of different types of cycling socks. A relatively new cycling sock is the aero sock. “What are aero socks?” I hear you thinking. We'll gladly explain what exactly this is!

What are aerosocks?

Aerosocks are – you guessed it – aerodynamic socks. Due to the fabric, the length of the sock, and the very tight fit, these socks have lower air resistance than “ordinary” socks. So it saves a few watts for the same effort. While for pros, where every watt counts – marginal gains – that naturally doesn't matter so much for the cycling tourist like you and me. But we just think it looks cool. And if it looks cool and also works in your favour, then of course there's absolutely no reason not to ride with it.

Anyway, we are fans for various reasons of a high sock.
